When I was sitting by the plane window with my camera on hold waiting for the first view over New York, I was expecting a lot. However, the first thing that emerged from the clouds when we made our descent was the orange lights of the landing strip. Apparently the weather had decided to make us feel more at home by providing sufficient amounts of fog and rain. Fortunately though, this didn’t last long. When we arrived at the apartment of our awesome host Eli, the skies had cleared enough for us to admire the astonishing view of the empire state building that is located almost across the street. The first night we spent by walking south, around places like the Flatiron building and Union Square. The next two days our wanders continued north, and we visited Times square, the Carnegie Hall, Bryant park, Central Park, the John Lennon Memorial, and various other famous places. It feels like walking in a movie. At least every second car is a yellow cab, drivers are honking at any chance they get, and the background noise of passing traffic is continuously filled in by howling sirens. Which by the way seems to be mostly coming from fire trucks rather than police cars, even though there isn’t the slightest sign of any fire nearby. We still haven’t figured out whether the firefighters are on a mission to break the world’s cat-saving record or are just turning on sirens to keep the NY-experience alive. A nice little fun fact is that a fire truck on its way to an emergency still stops for a red traffic light, unlike most of the taxi drivers, which can be a little annoying for pedestrians waiting for the same traffic lights if they forgot to bring their earplugs.
Twee dagen geleden zijn Nici en ik geland in New York. Het weer was er niet al te best, maar gelukkig duurde dat niet zo lang. Via via hebben we een slaapplek op te kop weten te tikken bij Eli, een jongeman uit New York met een appartement in het midden van Manhattan dat uitkijkt over de straten van Midtown en het Flatiron district. Het dak van dit 39 verdiepingen-tellende appartementencomplex leent zich perfect voor het maken van foto’s, en het uitzicht op het Empire State building aan de overkant van de straat is ook niet mis. De eerste twee dagen hebben we besteed aan het bezoeken van de bekende attracties, waaronder het Flatiron gebouw, Central park, de Carnegie Hall, Broadway, Times Square, etc. De stad geeft je keer op keer het gevoel alsof je in een film wandelt, met zijn schitterende uitzichten, gele taxi’s die de straten vullen, en de loeiende sirenes op de achtergrond. We zijn overigens blij dat we 6 dagen de tijd hebben genomen om New York te bekijken, alleen al in Central park zou je 2 dagen kunnen rondlopen.
